Does water eject work? What sound can and can’t do
Sometimes. A low tone may push water that sits near the speaker opening out through the grille, which can clear a muffled sound. It cannot remove water inside the phone, dry a charging port or repair damage, and results vary. Measuring before and after shows whether it helped.
What sound can do
A water eject tone plays through your iPhone’s speaker and makes it vibrate. If water is sitting on the speaker grille or in the opening in front of the speaker, those vibrations may push some of it out. When that water was what muffled the sound, the speaker can sound clearer afterwards. This is the only job a tone can do, and it is why careful tools describe it as helping to clear water near the speaker opening.
What sound can’t do
- It can’t remove water that has got inside the phone.
- It can’t dry a wet charging port. Follow Apple’s liquid-detection guidance for the connector.
- It can’t repair a speaker that was damaged by water, a drop or corrosion.
- It can’t tell you that a phone is safe after liquid exposure.
Is there evidence?
We are not aware of an independent study that measures how well water eject tones work on iPhones, so treat any tool, including Wick, as something that may help rather than a fix. Results vary with how much water there is, where it sits, the phone model and case, and the volume. When it is worth trying
A tone is worth a try when the speaker became quiet or muffled right after a splash, rain or a quick dip, and the phone otherwise works. Dry the phone first, check that audio plays from the built-in speaker, then run a clean with the speaker facing down. When to stop and get help
Stop and contact Apple Support or a qualified repair provider if the speaker is still muffled after the phone has fully dried, if you hear crackling or distortion, if the phone was submerged for a long time, or if anything else behaves oddly. Repeating a tone will not fix hardware damage.

How many times should I run a water eject tone?
Wick’s own tip is to run it two or three times, then let the phone rest for a few minutes. If there is no improvement after that and the phone has dried, more runs are unlikely to help.
Why is my speaker still muffled after the phone dried?
Water may have reached parts a tone cannot touch, debris may be caught in the grille, or the speaker may be damaged. A tone cannot fix any of these, so it is time to have the phone checked.
