iPhone speaker muffled after water? Start here.

A wet speaker opening can make audio sound quiet or distorted. Give the phone time to dry safely. A sound-based clean may help move water near the speaker opening, but it cannot remove water from inside the device or fix damaged hardware.

1. Keep the phone safe while it dries

  1. Disconnect cables and accessories. If your iPhone shows a liquid-detection alert, do not charge through that connector until it is dry.
  2. Gently tap the iPhone against your hand with its connector facing down, then leave it in a dry area with airflow. Avoid heat, compressed air, cotton swabs, and rice.
  3. If a liquid alert persists, allow more drying time. Apple says it can take up to 24 hours for a connector to dry fully.

These precautions follow Apple's liquid-detection guidance. Sound from an app is not a substitute for drying a wet charging connector.

2. Check the audio route and volume

Play a familiar sound and check that it comes from the iPhone's built-in speaker. Disconnect Bluetooth earbuds or other audio devices. Compare at a comfortable volume; turning it up cannot repair a damaged speaker. If only one app sounds wrong, check that app's audio settings too.

3. Try a sound-based clean when appropriate
